The terms AC-33A and AC-33B refer to specific categories of switchgear and controlgear classifications defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the standard IEC 60947-3. These categories are used to classify the duty and operational requirements of switches, disconnectors, and switch-disconnectors, particularly in relation to their ability to make, break, and carry current under certain conditions.

  • AC-33A: This classification applies to devices used for motor loads or mixed loads, which include motors and other types of loads (e.g., resistive, inductive). The devices in this category are suitable for frequent operation under more severe conditions. This might include scenarios where the load has significant inrush current or where the load includes both motors and resistive components.

  • AC-33B: Similar to AC-33A, but the “B” designation typically indicates that the device is intended for occasional operation rather than frequent operation. The devices are still suitable for mixed loads, including motors, but are expected to operate less frequently compared to AC-33A.

In summary:

  • AC-33A: Frequent operation, mixed motor and resistive loads.

  • AC-33B: Occasional operation, mixed motor and resistive loads.

These classifications help in selecting the appropriate type of switchgear for different industrial and commercial applications, ensuring safety and reliability.
