Is it really reasonable to go overboard with fast ATS switching?

Nowadays, there are ATS products on the market that over-emphasize fast changeover, with a changeover time of less than 100ms or even lower, as a way to meet the needs of certain loads. In fact, this is a false proposition. It is difficult to achieve fast changeover for mechanical transfer switch appliances, and it is unnecessary and unreasonable from the system point of view, and there are even safety hazards.

Power conversion time must be coordinated with the entire supply and distribution system relay protection

ATS conversion time needs to be coordinated with the power system. In civil buildings, the building is the end of the power system. The power sector generally gives end users a relay protection time limit of about 0.5s for 10kV. If the ATS on the low-voltage side is converted too quickly and the power supply on the high-voltage side has not been switched over, what is the significance of such a fast conversion? On the other hand, the ATS will monitor the operation of two power sources. If one power source is disconnected and the high-voltage side has not completed the conversion, the ATS detects that the other power source has no voltage, so of course it will not convert.

The switch between utility and diesel generator set can only be made after the diesel generator set is started and the power is transmitted steadily

When the utility power is off, the ATS cannot be switched immediately; the ATS needs to have a certain delay time to wait for the diesel generator set to start and transmit power steadily, and then the ATS monitors that the power from the generator set meets the requirements, and then it can be switched.

Fast conversion increases the risk of arc pulling and short-circuit between the two power supplies, with safety hazards

ATS in the process of power conversion, if the conversion speed is too fast, there is the possibility of arc pulling, which may cause a short-circuit between power sources. Therefore, the fast switching ATS has safety risks and should not be used.

Continuous power supply can be guaranteed by UPS

For loads with  allowable short power outage time is not guaranteed by ATS, milliseconds can be achieved by STS, others can be guaranteed by UPS, EPS and other power supply units. Do not let the ATS take on work beyond its capacity
